American Pet Cross Care Dog Program

Aging seniors and aging pets are going to provide huge opportunities for adoption and integration of pets into retirement communities, assisted living, and other types of senior transitional centers. As the population of the country continues to get older, and pet owners require more care themselves, many pets will lose their homes. APC is committed to transitioning these pets and their owners into facilities that are friendly to both. That’s why we created the APC Care Dog Program.

The purpose of the Care Dog Program is threefold:

  1. To petition legislators and care home owners to adopt polices that would allow seniors and their pets to be kept together as long as possible.
  2. To create opportunities for adoption by other seniors and care centers of those dogs that are not able to go with their owners.
  3. To create policies and procedures that advocate the placement of socialized dogs into care facilities of all types to serve as companions, mascots, and therapy dogs for both the facility and seniors.

American Pet Cross believes that growing older is a time of challenges and opportunities for both seniors and their pets. We help create the best situation possible by helping seniors and care facility owners answer the C.A.R.E. Dog Questions.

The C.A.R.E. Dog Questions:

  • What are the CHALLENGES that we face in this particular situation with the pet and its owner?
  • What are all the ALTERNATIVES that would be available to us in favorably resolving this situation?
  • What are the RESOURCES that we can utilize to help us reach our goals in this situation?
  • What is the ideal EXPERIENCE that could be created for the senior and their pet?

Not every situation involving seniors and their pets has a happy ending. American Pet Cross’ Care Dog Program, strives to create as many happy endings as possible.
